Don't Call the Cayman Islands...
If you need to call the Cayman Islands, and of course we have had to in order to put all of our plans together, get a plan from your cellular provider. Ben currently has a plan for $3.99 per month through AT&T, if you call the Cayman Islands without a plan it could cost $5 to $6 per minute, yikes!
Two sides of the Grand Cayman Island...
There is a west end and an east end of the Grand Cayman Islands, some of the resorts and hotels may have great deals but they may be located on the east end and that is okay but its a 45 minute drive from the east end to the west end where we are having our wedding so you my have to rent a car which can be done with Avis, Andy's, Budget, Coconut, and Thrifty.
Taxes...
Most of the resorts and restaurants charge a 20% tax on purchases. Please read the fine print when booking anything and everything. It will be worth your time and effort.
Currency...
It has been my experience that you can pay with Cayman Dollars or U.S. Dollars, most businesses even have registers that quickly give you the cost in either currency. Currently and for quite some time its $1.25 USD for $1 Cayman Dollar.
Beach Access...
Some of the resorts and hotels do not have access to the beach and that is okay too but keep in mind that if you want to sit on the beach you may have to buy a beach pass. For example, the all day beach pass at the Marriott that we are staying at is $12 USD per day. Trust us, the hotels and resorts are very serious about guests and non guests and the use of their beach, they will approach you.
The resort right south of the Marriott is Comfort Suites, they do not have beach access. Their rate for 1 Room Suite, 2 Double Beds, Maximum Room Occupancy of 6 persons, No Smoking (which also includes 2 person sofabed, shower only, limited equipment kitchenette, island view, microwave and refrigerator) is $118 USD per night if you book from either Wednesday, August 1st, Thursday, August 2nd, or Friday August 3rd through Monday, August 6th, 2012. That may sound good on the surface but reading the fine print, they charge an additional $8.80 USD per person staying in the room. If you come over to the Marriott to hang out on the beach the beach pass is $12 USD. Assumming 2 people stay in the room, adding all of this up, the $118 plus $17.60 for 2 people in the room plus $24 for 2 beach passes comes out to $159.60, which is approximately the cost of staying at the Marriott Resorts next door.
Here is a quick note, balcony does not necessarily mean oceanfront.
Again, all of these pages are a work in progress, if you have any ideas, whether its travel, lodging or activities, for us and for others please email Ben here so we can add it to the pages.
